A Must do: Family Getaway @Ras Al Khamiah

I look forward eagerly to weekend getaways and today I am going to write about one thing that is an absolute must do in UAE: Ras Al Khamiah. This beautiful emirate is offering a lot more than just deserts and beaches. Ras Al Khaimah is emerging as the most interesting emirate among its siblings. It boasts of majestic mountains, lush mangroves, therapeutic hot springs, in addition to terracotta dunes and more. It is the destination of choice for travelers looking to explore off the beaten path in UAE. Readers always request for an itinerary hence I am featuring the article in that form.

One can enjoy much better weather in RAK as compared to other emirates and there are a lot of activities for the whole family. Ras Al Khaimah’s Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE at 1,934 metres tall, records temperatures that are 10°C cooler on average than other popular landmarks across the country. The sweeping mountain range also offers a number of secluded camping spots for those eager to spend a night under the stars. We did opt for an afternoon picnic at Jebel Jais and chose Double Tree Hilton Resort & Spa for stay.

Double Tree Hilton Resort & Spa offers some great activities for kids along with leisure options for Adults. Rooms are nice and clean with balcony featuring the ocean or garden view. The hotel is equipped with a Kids Club featuring a climbing wall for active kids and Arcade Zone, in addition to an extensive outdoor playground with large swings, slides and many more. The Pirate Boat Aqua Zone has with lots of water slides, water buckets and sprinklers and my son Nirvaan spent one whole day between the two.

Day 1 at RAK

Jazirat Al Hamra abandoned village (16th century) 30 minutes

A short drive from the hotel , this abandoned fishing village, just outside Ras Al Khaimah city, with its coral-block architecture is a reminder of the simple local life before the oil boom. The Emirati inhabitants here would have made their living from pearl diving and fishing, but the villagers left in the 1960s. The dry desert climate has helped preserve the buildings giving the whole place a lost-in-time atmosphere.

Dhaya Fort (16th century) 2 hours trip

Originally built as a 16th century fortification to defend against invading forces and now the only hilltop military tower left standing in the UAE, Dhaya Fort offers a glimpse into Ras Al Khaimah’s riveting past while providing a modern symbol of the emirate’s enduring heritage.

Jebel Jais Mountain Picnic, 3 hours trip

Jais Mountain is the highest mountain in the United Arab Emirates is Part of Hajar Mountain. Jais Mountain offers a challenging and beautiful backdrop for hikers, mountain bikers and those looking for a scenic driving route. You can carry your own food and camping essentials and do a little picnic with family like I did.

Lunch at Al Marjan at Double Tree Hilton Resort & Spa

Al Marjan is an all-day dining restaurant and it offers an international buffet with live pasta, pizza cooking. We had our lunch here from 12.30 pm and chose for Al Fresco dining enjoying the beautiful weather till 3.30 pm.  From traditional Arabic counter to sushi we enjoyed each bit of this lunch. Vegetarian’s will also find enough options.

Spa time at EFOREA SPA

After Lunch I opted for a Spa treatment at Eforea Ladies Spa. It offers an indoor pool, 2 treatment rooms, Jacuzzi, Sauna and Steam room and ice bucket shower, in addition to a relaxation lounge, a café and hair salon. I opted for a Nurturing Massage this body massage integrates pressure point work, light stretching techniques and a relaxing scalp massage to relieve muscular aches and pains.

Well it doesn’t end here as we kept the evening for some Adventure Sports at the hotel. We opted for 30 minutes Jet Ski and 30 minutes of Donut ride and this was a wow experience, one must definitely not miss it.
