I was super excited to visit the new avatar of Patiala at Souk Al Bahar now named as Patiala by Kunal Kapur ; a fine dining restaurant with Indian classics and contemporary degustation menus in Dubai, by renowned Indian celebrity Chef Kunal Kapur.
Chef Kunal Kapur is one of the most celebrated faces of Indian cuisine today, being a Chef extraordinaire, host of MasterChef India, winner of several culinary awards and the author of HIS BESTSELLING cookbook- ‘A Chef in Every Home’. With a dream to make Indian cuisine the most popular in the world, Kunal knew that opening a restaurant in Dubai would be a great place from where to reach both Indian and non-Indian food-lovers alike.
Named after the princely state in Punjab, Patiala, the restaurant serves dishes THAT ARE PAN INDIAN, with immaculate presentation and pitch-perfect spicing. I was invited to try the newly launched menu at Patiala devised by Kunal Kapur. Starters included a long list of kebabs : Magjiadi Kebab (A crumbly kebab of broken Pistachio, Almonds, Cashewnuts, lightly smoked), Palak Zardaloo Kebab (Spinach and apricots patties cooked with garlic finished with desi ghee on a griddle), Dahi Ke Kebab and more. Punjabi Chenna Bruschetta and Garam masala marinated eggplant steak was something very different and with enhanced flavours. I liked it a lot. Main course was superb too as it included Palak Soya, Dal Makhni, Dum ke Khumb, Subz Biryani and many more for non-vegetarians. My favourite from the desserts is Chenna Payesh Pie (Stewed cheese dumplings, mascarpone, Baileys, Madras filter coffee, amaretto, chikki crumble) & a must try.
The menu comprises of the Old and New Patiala menu with earlier version bringing out the old world charm of classic Indian food and New Patiala offering innovative Indian cuisine inspired by Chef Kunal’s travels around the world. Vegetarian starters are priced AED 40 to AED 80 while Non Vegetarian are between AED 95 to AED 155. Kebab and Seafood platters are available as well perfect for a group of people dining at Patiala. Main course has a huge selection of Veg and Non Veg dishes. Something to suit everyone’s taste. Innovation is high on the priority list him with all dishes created having their own unique stories behind them. With Patiala signatures such as Grilled Chilean Sea bass with strawberry Chutney and Bengali Mustard and the lightly spiced Pumpkin and Apricot Shorba, the new creative menu is trendy and young, with every course enhancing the senses. While the other side of the Patiala Menu is perfect for all the die hard lovers of the old classics with the chef’s signatures like the Dorra Kebab (Lamb Seekh cooked on Perfumed Resham Dorra), the Haleem Kebab, Malai Prawns and Subz Khatai Kebab all being must try dishes.
The restaurant décor chimes with Patiala’s luxurious theme, as the display kitchen lets diners watch, as their richly flavoured dishes are prepared in the tandoor, over charcoal or on a ‘Tawa’ hot plate. The result is signature dishes and authentic recipes that are rarely tasted outside of India in an environment designed to appeal to Dubai’s discerning diners. As well as boasting a main dining area, Patiala also has two private dining rooms, perfect for intimate events and a sociable lounge bar.
One of the best ways to sample the Patiala offering is to try the tasting menus that showcase small bites of the signature dishes from each course, paired with a nice beverage or an exciting mocktail to enhance the taste of the experience.
“Creating a menu that would really turn heads was always the plan for Patiala.” Says Kunal Kapur. “When thinking up the dishes for the new menu, we wanted to give Dubai foodies a dining experience that would go beyond just providing good food, but also encourage discussion and innovation, showing the world the true essence of Indian cuisine. The New Patiala part of our menu will constantly adapt as produce in the region changes, always giving our guests something fresh, seasonal and exciting to experience.”
The new menu at Patiala has already launched, with exclusive tasting menus set to feature once a month, where guests can join together to have dinner cooked for them by him – an unbelievable experience to taste this MasterChef India judge’s artistic culinary creations for themselves.
